The Elderly Wisdom Project

An historical project with lessons for today

The Elderly Wisdom Project was developed by Mary Woollaston (Holy Trinity, Avalon) and Toni Weir (St Peter’s, Wellington) during 2013. Both Mary and Toni represented their church on the Transition Churches Core Group.

The idea was to capture and use some of the knowledge the elderly hold. Young people from Holy Trinity Avalon Church and St David’s Naenae developed questions to ask when they interviewed the elderly people in their parish. These had a focus on food, water, clothing, transport and schooling. Findings were written up in story form for the elderly interviewed by the young people. Ideas that came forward were discussed with the young people over a pizza tea and presented to their churches for action. A celebration dinner at St David’s completed this project. This concept has since been used in other areas in different contexts.
